Iacovos Kareklas was born in Nicosia on the 18th of October 1976. He graduated (with Apolyterion Excellent) first in his Class receiving ten academic awards from the Classics Department of the Kykkos Lyceum.
He got his B.A. (Honours) and M.A. Degrees in Law from Cambridge University, Magdalene College. At the University of Cambridge, where he studied on a Cambridge Common¬wealth Trust Scholarship jointly with a British Foreign Office Bursary, he won First Prize in the de Smith Mooting Competition of the Cambridge University Law Society, of which he is a life member. He was particularly keen on Constitutional Law and Theory, which he studied in depth having as tutor Sir Derek Oulton Q.C. (drafter of the Kenya Constitution).
He holds a Ph.D. in International Law from London University (London School of Eco¬nomics and Political Science). He specialized in all aspects of Public International Law and every aspect of the Cyprus problem. He conducted sustained and in depth research in the Foreign Office Archives with regard to the critical phases of the Cyprus Question. During his doctoral program, he was a Teaching Assistant in subjects of his specialization.
In the academic year 2004, he was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Department of Government, Harvard University. He did postdoctoral studies in International Politics Theory with special reference to the Use of Military Force and emphasis on classical antiquity under the worldwide distinguished political scientist, Professor Stanley Hoffmann. At Harvard, he also taught the course Classical Theories of International Relations. In the year 2004-2005 Dr. Kareklas flew to Boston again and was appointed Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Member of the Harvard Faculty Club. In 2006 and 2007 he was elected Fellow of the Centre for Criminology, Faculty of Law (Honour School of Jurisprudence) in the University of Oxford, where he specialized in penal Jurisprudence.
In 2008 Dr. Kareklas was elected Lecturer at the European University Cyprus and was appointed coordinator of the Law Program. From 2013 to 2019 he was an Associate Professor, a rank at which he was unanimously elected. He is now an Adjunct Professor. He teaches International Law, Philosophy of Law, Constitutional Law, and International Politics. He further took part in many appointment and promotion committees.
Dr. Kareklas has been elected Visiting Fellow in the University of Oxford for the academic year 2021-22.
He spent a year as researcher in the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (ICS) of London (2001-2002), the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (2003), the Oxford Centre for Criminology (2006). He has given lectures in English and American Universities as well as various political organizations.
He is the author of a twenty-five books, and articles in the fields of his specialization. His latest book entitled Thucydides on International Law and Political Theory was published in New York by Rowman and Littlefield: Lexington Books, in 2020. In 2014 he launched an original series (of which he is the editor), namely Studies in International Law and International Politics (in Greek, ΜΕΛΕΤΕΣ ΔΙΕΘΝΟΥΣ ΔΙΚΑΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΔΙΕΘΝΟΥΣ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΗΣ) published by the preeminent Law publisher SAKKOULAS in Athens.
He served in the Republic of Cyprus National Guard, Heavy Artillery Division at the rank of second lieutenant. In the year 1996 he served at the General Headquarters.
